The law giving tax credits to companies who hire veterans expires in about two months. During a visit to Lufkin RMT Friday, Sen. Charles Schumer said the program’s renewal needs to be a priority for the federal government.  Of the roughly 2,015 unemployed veterans in the Southern Tier, Schumer noted, 182 live in Allegany County. “One of our legacies should be that we take care of our vets. They risk their lives for us and then they come back and we should be doing something for them,” he told Lufkin employees and Wellsville and county officials. “Now, we’ve made great progress in a few areas. Veterans’ health is much better than it was five years ago. We’re even dealing with these new ailments like PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and things like that.
