MEDIA ADVISORY
President Obama is charging companies to hire 100,000 veterans by 2010 to help jumpstart the economy and job market.

WHO: President Obama held a press conference on Friday (Aug. 5) regarding the economy and the Administration’s work to prepare the nation’s veterans for the workforce. He’s charging the private sector to employ 100,000 vets or their spouses by 2013, offering vets a “reverse boot camp,” better training them to re-enter civilian life and offering businesses an incentive to hire veterans.

WHAT: San Diego has piloted the very solution that President Obama is suggesting. REBOOT™ is a three-week workshop, provided by the National Veterans Transition Services, Inc. (NVTSI) that helps veterans ease back into civilian life after service.

REBOOT was launched by Retired Rear Admiral Ronne Froman and Retired Master Chief Petty Officer Maurice Wilson in July 2010, after becoming concerned with the increasing number of former service members not adjusting to the “real world.”

The REBOOT concept is that if you have to go through boot camp to be acculturated for the military, there should be a similar (“reverse boot camp”) program when you leave the service as well.

San Diego is home to the nation’s largest number of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans returning from wartime duty. Each year, about 28,000 veterans in San Diego leave the military – 200,000 nationwide. California leads the nation with over 100,000 of the 1,000,000 plus unemployed veterans.

WHEN: Week of August 8-12; workshops take place M-F
The media is asked to please call in advance to schedule a time to visit.

**NVTSI’s next workshop begins Monday, Aug. 8.**

WHERE: National Veterans Transition Services, Inc. headquarters
4141 Camino Del Rio South, San Siego CA 92108

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND:

President Obama is proposing that the Returning Heroes Tax Credit will offer companies that hire unemployed veterans an increase in the existing tax credit for companies who hire unemployed veterans with a disability, ranging from $2,400 to $9,600.

REBOOT workshops are available free of charge for unemployed veterans of all wars, transitioning active duty personnel, as well as their spouses. With the conflict in Iraq winding down and the military poised to leave Afghanistan, numbers leaving the military service will increase.
