Veterans from across the country are meeting in Dallas this weekend to prep for six months of service – but not in the military. About 75 post-9/11 veterans are giving back in another way by volunteering at nonprofits like Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers and Big Sisters. The fellowships are funded by the Mission Continues, a national organization that helps veterans transition to civilian life through volunteering. The program works because it taps into a veteran’s desire to serve and be part of an organization with a greater purpose, said Spencer Kympton, chief operating officer for The Mission Continues. “We’re asking them to essentially put on a new uniform of service,” he said.
