Lee Gutierrez, Deputy Secretary, Minority Veterans Affairs

Lee Gutierrez was appointed Deputy Secretary Minority Veterans at the California Department of Veterans Affairs by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. on December 5, 2011.

He is a retired Colonel with over 29 years of commissioned service in the United States Army, serving in twelve countries to include Iraq and Afghanistan. Lee Gutierrez received his commission from the Reserve Officer Training Corp. Colonel Gutierrez has served in multiple command positions ranging from brigade to platoon and joint staff positions to include Director of Cultural Awareness and Counterinsurgency (Training all of the US Forces Military Trainers to serve as Military Advisors in Iraq and Afghanistan) and Executive Assistant to the Commanding General of First United States Army, Lieutenant General Honore’ during the height of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and during relief efforts following Hurricane Katrina.

Colonel Gutierrez’ military awards include the Combat Action Badge, Bronze Star Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (7th Award) Operation Iraqi Freedom Medal, Army Commendation Medal (4th Award), Army Achievement Award (2nd Award), National Defense Ribbon (with Bronze Star Device), Humanitarian Service Award, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon (3rd Award), Parachutist Badge, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, and Army Superior Unit Award. Colonel Gutierrez is a graduate of the School of Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia Command and General Staff College and the US Army War College.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California San Diego, Revelle College, a Master’s of Public Administration from National University and a Masters of Strategic Study from the US Army War College.
